Scottish Apprenticeship Week: Fancy Becoming an Electrician? ⚡
At HomeRewire, our electricians carry out house rewiring projects across Glasgow and throughout Scotland, helping homeowners upgrade outdated wiring and improve electrical safety. As a company specialising in full house rewiring, developing skilled electricians through apprenticeships is a vital part of maintaining high standards across every rewiring project we undertake.
Every year, Scottish Apprenticeship Week celebrates the people learning their trade and the businesses helping develop the next generation of skilled workers across Scotland.
At HomeRewire, apprenticeships have always been an important part of the company’s growth. Even with a large team of experienced electricians, we continue to invest in training new talent and helping young people start a long-term career in the electrical industry.
Our teams are out rewiring homes across Scotland every day, and behind many of those projects are apprentices learning the skills that will shape their future careers.
To mark the week, we spoke with two members of the team — Craig and Lewis — about their journeys into the trade and their advice for anyone thinking about becoming an electrician.

Lewis’ Journey to Becoming a Qualified Electrician
Lewis is now a fully qualified 18th Edition electrician, but like many in the industry, he started as an apprentice learning the fundamentals of the trade.
In the video below, Lewis talks about how he got started and shares some advice for young people looking to break into the electrical industry.
Apprenticeships give young people the opportunity to:
-
Learn practical skills on real jobs
-
Earn while they train
-
Gain recognised electrical qualifications
-
Build a long-term career in the trade
For companies specialising in complex work like full house rewires, apprenticeships are particularly valuable. Rewiring requires a deep understanding of electrical systems, safety regulations, and problem-solving — skills that take time and experience to develop.
Learning the Skills Behind House Rewiring
Electrical apprenticeships give young electricians the opportunity to gain real on-site experience working alongside qualified professionals. At HomeRewire, apprentices often assist experienced electricians on Glasgow rewiring projects, learning how full house rewires are planned, installed, and tested safely.
From installing new circuits to upgrading consumer units, apprentices develop the skills needed to eventually carry out complete electrical rewiring projects across Scotland.
Craig’s Route Into the Electrical Industry
Not every electrician starts out knowing they want to work in the trade.
Craig, one of our team members working across Glasgow and the surrounding areas, nearly took a completely different path. At one stage he was considering becoming a PE teacher and heading to university.
Instead, he decided to pursue an apprenticeship in the electrical industry — a decision that led to a rewarding hands-on career.
Craig shares his journey and advice for school leavers in the video below.
His story highlights something we see regularly: many young people discover that a skilled trade offers a practical, rewarding alternative to traditional academic routes.
Why Apprenticeships Matter in the Electrical Industry
The demand for skilled electricians continues to grow across Scotland. With older housing stock, property renovations, and increasing electrical demands in modern homes, experienced electricians are essential.
Companies specialising in house rewiring and electrical upgrades rely heavily on properly trained tradespeople. That’s why apprenticeships remain such an important part of the industry.
At HomeRewire, our team currently includes 22 Team Members working across Scotland, combining decades of experience with the next generation of electrical talent.
By training apprentices alongside experienced electricians, we ensure:
-
High standards of workmanship
-
Strong knowledge of electrical safety regulations
-
A future workforce capable of handling complex rewiring projects
It also gives young people the chance to learn directly from experienced professionals who have spent years working on properties ranging from modern homes to older buildings.
Could an Electrical Apprenticeship Be the Right Path for You?
For many school leavers across Scotland, an apprenticeship offers a direct route into a skilled career.
Becoming an electrician can provide:
-
Long-term job security
-
Strong earning potential
-
A practical, hands-on career
-
Opportunities to specialise in areas like full house rewiring, testing, or installation
The electrical trade also offers the satisfaction of seeing the results of your work — from installing new consumer units to completely modernising the wiring of a home.
Investing in the Next Generation of Electricians
Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a great reminder of how important it is for businesses to invest in young tradespeople.
At HomeRewire, apprenticeships are part of the company’s long-term vision. While experienced electricians carry out the majority of complex rewiring work, apprentices are learning the skills that will eventually allow them to take on those projects themselves.
It’s how the electrical industry continues to grow — and how companies like HomeRewire maintain the high standards customers expect when carrying out full house rewires across Scotland.

⚡ Thinking about becoming an electrician?
As demand continues to grow for qualified electricians and house rewiring services in Glasgow and across Scotland, investing in apprenticeships ensures the electrical industry continues to develop skilled professionals who can deliver safe, modern electrical installations.
Scottish Apprenticeship Week is the perfect time to explore the opportunities available in the trade.
And if you know someone who would make a great apprentice pass this on to them.
